XBox Madness!
I'd like to briefly discuss the craziness we witnessed, but first, here's a hint of what's to come here on my part of our blog:
1. I Hate Nature - In which I describe, with pictures and prose, why trees are evil.
2. Filux - In which I describe the harrowing experience that is building one's own Linux distribution from scratch.
But now,did you all hear about the lunacy that went on with the release of the XBox360 today? I mean SERIOUSLY, folks. You'd think it was 1985 and they had just run out of Cabbage Patch dolls, or something.
I read one account of someone running around seeing how it's going. But the most amazing thing I found is this ebay sale of an XBox360 for $10,600. That's right. ONE XBOX360. For more than the cost of a brand new Yugo.
Yikes!
My personal feeling is that it's just a ploy by Micro$oft to build HYPE. They promised that there weren't be shortages, but there were folks who preordered in June, and still didn't get their orders filled. That's no good. I expect that the retailers bear some responsibility for the oversale or pre-orders, but M$ should have been able to produce enough units to meet demand.
Even so, the craze works in the Beast of Redmond's favor. People now feel like they're joining an exclusive club if they manage to get ahold of one of the prized gaming consoles. I expect they'll be trickling them steadily to retail outlets Real Soon Now.
