The Angels Danced Last Night

Day to Day | Growing Up

A couple of nights ago while I was getting Colby to bed, she pointed to her chest and said, "Jesus lives in my heart."

Naturally, I was thrilled when she said that to me. I asked her about Jesus and if she know that she could have him in her heart. She said she did. But for some reason, I didn't ask her if she wanted to ask him to come in that night. A missed opportunity, to be sure.

Last night when it was time for us to pray, I asked her if she wanted to ask Jesus to come into her heart. She said she did.

I said to her, "You'll need to pray yourself, though. I can't do it for you." Most nights - well, all of them except for one or two ever - Colby doesn't want to pray herself, and prefers that I just do it.

But, in response to me, she said, "OK."

I was a little surprised, having expected her to say that I should just pray. But I seized the opportunity and told her to just ask Jesus to come in. And she did.

"Jesus, come into my heart," she said with enthusiasm. "He's coming in!"

I smiled and said, "Great! Now tell Jesus that you love him."

"I love Jesus!"

"Now say 'Jesus, I need you.'"

"I need you, Jesus."

"Now ask Jesus to save you."

"Jesus, save me."

Wow! My daughter just grabbed a ticket to Heaven! What an incredible blessing!

Cat and I have prayed for her since before she was born, and we know that lots of you have, too. So praise God! Our prayers have been answered.

And this is how I know it's for real: Colby actually wanted to pray herself. The few times in the past that she's prayed have been at the strong urging of Cat or me. We pray each night with her before bed, and we offer her the opportunity to pray. She just rarely accepts the offer. But last night, she dove into it with all the gusto her little 3-year-old heart could muster. She was eager to have Jesus in her heart, which, in my opinion, is where he belongs.

So to those of you who have been praying for her, redouble your efforts, that she will grow into a woman who knows God's voice, and who answers when he calls. To those of you who haven't been praying for her, what are you waiting for? She needs your prayers. Cat and I do, too, for that matter. We have to teach her how to live a godly life - a daunting task, to put it lightly.

God is good! Praise God!
