Pirate Name

    My pirate name is:

The Heimburgers in Zambia

My Uncle Doug, Aunt Beth, and my litle cousin Betsy (she's not so little any longer, I suppose) have recently left America for an extended stay in Zambia, where Uncle Doug will study the effects of diet on recipients of a drug treatment for HIV in Lusaka. There's a facility there that's run by his university, the University of Alabama, Birmingham. I had hoped to syndicate their blog postings here, but they only have an atom feed, and our site doesn't support atom at the moment. So, you can read their blog here and get the details firsthand.

Welcome to our new home!

Some of you may have noticed brief downtime earlier this evening. Well, we moved to a new web hosting service. We were unhappy with our previous hosting company, and moved. We're paying a bit more now, but we're getting a 10,000% increase in our available disk space, so we think it's worth it. OK. Enjoy the site. It's not any different than before.

How much weight can you lift with YOUR penis?

I couldn't believe when I found this. Cat and I were looking for the video she posted below (and do you know what he did?) because there was an issue with the hosting company and we couldn't get to the link on our site. Having tried several searches without success, I searched using the answer to the question. We got the video returned as the first search result.

The second result was a story about this Chinese dude who pulled a truck several meters with his penis. That's right, his penis. He didn't have a huge harness around his shoulders so he could really lean into the pull, he just had this truck attached to his penis. And he pulled it. Several meters. What's even more amazing is that he had an assistant give him a good solid kick in the 'nads as a part of his "warm up".

Happy Black Friday, Suckers!

I'm certain that some of the advertised Black Friday "door buster" deals are really good deals. I'm dubious that it's worth sacrificing a night- or even a partial night) of sleep for them. It's dangerous out there when you're contending with mothers and/or crazed teenagers for this year's Hot Holiday Item. You could get a black eye, for goodness' sake. You could get stuck in a brawl (see the video link about half-way down the page), as is reported to have happened at one Walmart in Florida. I bet we'll hear of more similar incidents as the day progresses.

Michael Yon Strikes Again!

Michael Yon's latest dispatch from Iraq, Gates of Fire, is up on his blog. I've mentioned Mr. Yon here before, and I continue to enjoy his writing.

He gives readers a much different picture of the war than we normally hear. It's gritty and very real - it stands in stark contrast to the "This many Americans Died Today" we hear every day from the major news outlets. Not that our fallen soldiers aren't important, quite the contrary. But when Yon encounters a situation where there's been a casualty, he provides context. What was this or that soldier doing when they got injured or killed? Why were they doing it? What impact do the casualties have on the uninjured soldiers there in Iraq?

Major Correction re: "How Awful!"

I posted here about what had been reported as the reason for Steven Vincent's murder in Iraq. It turns out that while the premise of the information is correct - Mr. vincent was planning to marry his interpreter - the implication that I drew from the story was incorrect.

Missing content

A couple of stories have disappeared from our site. That's a nuisance. The web hosting provider moved us to a new server. I guess they took their backup before we put up our last couple of posts. We've also lost a couple of comments.

At least they didn't totally mangle the site and cause days of downtime like they did with palmersroom.com...

How awful!

I read a week or two ago about the murder of Steven Vincent, an independent reporter and blogger who was in Iraq chasing down information about what it's really like over there. Such courage!

Having read his last couple of articles, I assumed that some of the criticism of the local rulers where he was - and the criticism seemed quite mild to me - had offended someone in some way, and that hey had had him removed, so to speak.

Today, I came across this. I'm shocked. I shouldn't be, given the "freedom fighters'" propensity for senseless violence, but I am.

Great reporting from Iraq!

I meant to post this a couple of days ago, but haven't until now. Michael Yon is a reporter in Iraq. He's with a military unit, and his stories are really well written. Yon presents news that we don't get from most of the major news outlets here in the States. You can read his latest entry here.

Yes, they CAN be dumber.

Apparently, this whole mess with the unfortunate GTA:SA sex content is set to make the world worse for gaming enthusiasts. While Take Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, who publishes the game series, has admitted that their own developers were responsible for the content, they still seem to think that modders are responsible for the mess they now find themselves in. You know, their stock price has fallen, their flagship game is being pulled from store shelves and is being dropped by Electronic Boutique, a major online retailer of games. (I searched the site and only found strategy guides - no copies of the game.)

So here it is...

A couple of weeks ago, I suggested that we all Pray for the President. After the resignation of Justice O'Connor, he had suddenly and unexpectedly been presented with the daunting task, and the great honor, of selecting the next justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

So now we know that John Roberts is Bush's selection. I don't know anything about him except what I've heard on the news this evening, but his demeanor during his introduction tells me that he's a humble guy. He seemed sincerely complimented that the President chose HIM to fill Justice O'Connor's seat. He looked like a kid who had just met his hero - he couldn't keep the smile from breaking on his face. I really enjoyed seeing that. It was very real - something we don't get a lot of lately from that part of the country.

International Kissing Day

That's <a href="http://bamber.blogspot.com/2005/07/today-is-international-kissing-day.html"?>today (via Instapundit). So in honor of International Kissing Day, here's a story for you about a kiss.

-------------------------------------

A young couple went for a date one night. The weather was perfect - a clear sky, a full moon, and the heavens full of stars. He appeared at her door, smiling.

"Shall we go?"
"Yes."

So they went. She was beauty personified. Her every step the very picture of elegance and grace. He was tall and strong. But his apparent strength gave way to his gentle demeanor, and his smile seemed a permanent fixture on his countenance.
